Anthropic reports that Claude worked largely autonomously for 11 days to produce an end-to-end, computer-checked formalization of Fermat’s Last Theorem. Formalization means rewriting a human-readable proof so a computer can verify each logical step. Lean 4 is the language used for that rewrite; its kernel is the checking core that verifies the formal logic. The public repository records a fresh build, comparator checks that the formal statement matches the reference theorem, and acceptance by a second, independent kernel written in Rust. The broader formalization ecosystem is also testing collaborative approaches: the Prove2Me paper describes an open platform where people and artificial-intelligence agents contribute proofs that software checks.
